Edge of the Century

Released in 1990, Edge of the Century represents a significant lineup shift for Styx, introducing Glen Burtnik as a replacement for Tommy Shaw. This change moved the band's sound further away from their progressive rock roots and toward a contemporary pop-rock and AOR (Album Oriented Rock) aesthetic. The album is most famous for the hit ballad 'Show Me The Way,' which became an anthem during the Persian Gulf War, cementing the record's place in the cultural zeitgeist of the early 90s. Sonically, the album is characterized by the heavy use of digital synthesizers and highly compressed, radio-ready production. It remains the only studio effort to feature the specific lineup of DeYoung, Young, Burtnik, and the Panozzo brothers, serving as a final document of John Panozzo's drumming before his passing. While it polarized long-time prog fans, it successfully modernized the Styx sound for a new decade.
