Released in November 1983, Electric Universe represents the most significant sonic departure in Earth, Wind & Fire's career. Following the massive success of their horn-driven funk era, leader Maurice White made the controversial decision to disband the Phenix Horns and lean heavily into the emerging synth-pop and new wave aesthetics. The album was produced by White with significant contributions from David Foster and Martin Page, resulting in a sound dominated by the Oberheim and Roland synthesizers. Lyrically, the album explores themes of technological advancement and global connectivity, mirroring the 'Information Age' zeitgeist.
