Following the conceptual density of Operation: Mindcrime, Queensrÿche pivoted toward a song-oriented approach with 1990's Empire. Produced by Peter Collins, the album is a landmark of high-fidelity recording, utilizing the sonic possibilities of the era to create a 'mini-concept' arc within its first half through the use of environmental sound effects and thematic links. While it moved the band toward a more accessible hard rock sound, it retained progressive elements through unconventional song structures and socially conscious lyrics. The album's centerpiece, 'Silent Lucidity,' became a massive crossover success, yet the record's true character lies in its atmospheric deep cuts like 'Della Brown' and 'Anybody Listening?'. It remains the band's most commercially successful release, certified triple-platinum, and is frequently cited as a bridge between the technicality of 80s metal and the more grounded, atmospheric rock of the early 90s.
