Epitaph

Released in 2018, 'Epitaph' stands as the most somber and personal entry in God Is An Astronaut's discography. Written in response to the death of the Kinsella brothers' seven-year-old cousin, the album eschews their typical uptempo 'electronic-rock' fusion for a style closer to post-metal and dark ambient. Produced by the band with Xenon Field, the record features cover art by Fursy Teyssier, whose visual style (associated with Alcest and Les Discrets) perfectly mirrors the album's 'blackgaze' and 'doom' leanings. Musically, it is defined by a heavy reliance on the lower register - baritone guitars and distorted bass - contrasted with delicate, high-register piano work. This duality represents the tension between the harsh reality of death and the ethereal nature of memory. Critics noted the album's increased intensity and emotional depth compared to its predecessor, 'Helios | Erebus', marking it as a high point in their later-period evolution.
