Released in 1984 on Tamla, Essar represents Smokey Robinson's full embrace of 1980s production technology. Co-produced with Reginald 'Sonny' Burke, the album is heavily characterized by the use of synthesizers and drum machines, moving away from the orchestral soul of his earlier solo career. The title itself is a phonetic play on his initials, S.R. While it was not a massive commercial success compared to his 70s peaks, the album has gained a cult following, particularly in the dance music community; the instrumental dub of 'And I Don't Love You' eventually became a staple in house music circles decades later.
