Exis

Released in July 2015, Exis served as the formal introduction of Roy Woods to the OVO Sound roster. The EP gained significant momentum following the premiere of the track 'Drama' (featuring Drake) on the inaugural OVO Sound Radio show. Sonically, the project is a cornerstone of the 'Toronto Sound' that dominated the mid-2010s, characterized by its dark, moody production and heavy use of spatial effects. Unlike some of his peers who leaned into a more nihilistic tone, Woods brought a distinct vocal athleticism to the project, influenced by Michael Jackson's agility but filtered through a modern, trap-influenced lens. The six-track project is remarkably cohesive, maintaining a consistent late-night atmosphere that bridges the gap between traditional R&B songwriting and the experimental textures of the internet-era 'PBR&B' movement. It remains a fan favorite for its raw, unpolished emotionality compared to his later, more studio-refined full-length albums.
