Fat Albert Rotunda (1969) marks a pivotal transition in Herbie Hancock's career, serving as his debut for Warner Bros. after a legendary run at Blue Note. Originally composed for the Bill Cosby TV special 'Hey, Hey, Hey, It's Fat Albert,' the album finds Hancock moving away from the avant-garde leanings of his late-60s work toward a more accessible, soul-jazz and early funk sound. While it retains the sophisticated harmonic language of post-bop, the emphasis shifts toward the 'groove.' This record is notable for its early use of the Fender Rhodes electric piano, which would become a signature of Hancock's 70s output. The ensemble features heavy hitters like Joe Henderson and Johnny Coles, delivering tight horn arrangements that mimic the punch of a big band while maintaining a small-group feel.
