Felt Mountain

Felt Mountain is the debut studio album by Goldfrapp, released in September 2000 on Mute Records. A collaboration between vocalist Alison Goldfrapp and composer Will Gregory, the album was famously recorded in a rented bungalow in the Wiltshire countryside, an environment whose isolation and natural discomforts (including mice and insects) deeply informed the record's lonely, surreal atmosphere. Sonically, it is a departure from the dance-oriented synth-pop the duo would later become famous for on albums like Black Cherry and Supernature. Instead, Felt Mountain is a sophisticated blend of Ennio Morricone-inspired cinematic arrangements, cabaret, and downtempo electronica. It is notable for its use of unconventional instruments like the theremin and harpsichord, alongside Alison's virtuosic, breathy vocal delivery which often utilizes vocoders and pitch-shifting. The album was a critical darling, earning a Mercury Prize nomination and establishing Goldfrapp as a premier force in British art pop. It remains a touchstone for the 'cinematic' electronic subgenre, praised for its cohesive world-building and timeless production quality.
