Floodland

Released in 1987, Floodland represents a radical shift for The Sisters of Mercy, effectively serving as an Andrew Eldritch solo project following the acrimonious departure of the original lineup. Recorded primarily at Power Station in Manhattan, the album benefited from the unlikely but brilliant collaboration with Jim Steinman, the producer known for Meat Loaf's operatic rock. Steinman's influence is most visible on the epic 'This Corrosion,' which features a massive choir and a nine-minute runtime that defied radio conventions. Sonically, the album is defined by its use of the Oberheim DMX drum machine and the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer, creating a cold, digital landscape that was then processed through massive amounts of analog reverb. Critics, including those from AllMusic and Pitchfork, have retrospectively lauded the album for its cohesive vision and its role in elevating gothic rock from a subcultural niche to a cinematic art form.
