Foxbase Alpha

Foxbase Alpha is the 1991 debut from Saint Etienne, a project formed by music journalists Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. Recorded primarily in a bedroom studio with engineer Ian Catt, the album is a landmark of the 'indie-dance' movement, though it stands apart for its deep obsession with 1960s pop aesthetics and London psychogeography. While the band initially used various guest vocalists, the inclusion of Sarah Cracknell on tracks like 'London Belongs to Me' defined their permanent sound. The album is famous for its heavy use of sampling, drawing from sources as diverse as David Mamet's 'House of Games' and Neil Young. It successfully bridged the gap between the burgeoning ambient house scene and the traditional songcraft of the Great American Songbook. Critically, it is regarded as a precursor to Britpop, though it lacks that movement's later lad-culture aggression, favoring a sophisticated, feminine, and wistful perspective on British life.
