Released in 2018, Freddie serves as a stylistic detour for Freddie Gibbs, leaning heavily into the contemporary trap sounds of the late 2010s. Coming off the back of the more introspective You Only Live 2wice, this self-titled project (often referred to by fans as the 'Teddy Pendergrass album' due to its iconic cover art) focuses on bangers over ballads. Produced largely by Kenny Beats and other trap-leaning architects, the album strips away the soul samples in favor of aggressive percussion and dark, looping melodies. Despite the shift in production, Gibbs' lyrical content remains rooted in Gary, Indiana street narratives, delivered with his signature technical proficiency. The album was famously marketed with a parody infomercial, highlighting Gibbs' sense of humor, yet the music itself is some of his most confrontational and high-energy work to date. It solidified his ability to dominate any subgenre of hip-hop he touches.
