Friends

Released in June 1968, Friends represents a radical pivot for The Beach Boys. While the rest of the music world was leaning into heavy psychedelia and political unrest, the group produced a calm, meditative, and brief collection of songs that prioritized domesticity and spiritual health. Recorded primarily at Brian Wilson's home studio in Bel Air, the album is often cited as his second 'solo' effort in spirit, though it notably features the first songwriting contributions from Dennis Wilson. The influence of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is palpable, particularly on the closing track, reflecting the band's brief but intense involvement with Transcendental Meditation. Despite its poor commercial performance at the time, Friends has since been reclaimed by critics and fans as a high-water mark of 'sunshine pop' and a precursor to the bedroom pop movement.
