Frontier

Released in 2008 on the Manimal Vinyl label, Frontier is the second full-length album from Rio en Medio (Danielle Stech-Homsy). Following her debut, The Bride of Dynamite, this record further refined her signature blend of baritone ukulele and electronic collage. The album is notable for its expansive track lengths, particularly the centerpiece 'Venus of Willendorf,' which stretches over seven minutes and showcases her ability to move from traditional folk structures into ambient, textural explorations. The production is intentionally lo-fi and intimate, utilizing bedroom recording techniques that emphasize the physical space of the performance. Critically, the album was positioned within the 'freak folk' scene of the mid-to-late 2000s, drawing comparisons to artists like Vashti Bunyan and CocoRosie, yet it remains distinct due to its heavier reliance on digital manipulation and found-sound percussion.
