Garbage

Released in early 1995, Garbage serves as a bridge between the melodic, ambient-leaning techno of Autechre's 'Amber' and the more aggressive, rhythmic deconstruction found on 'Tri Repetae.' The EP consists of four long-form tracks that utilize the same sound palette as the 'Amber' sessions but push the material into more experimental, elongated territories. The title and artwork are self-referential; the cover is a digitally processed and 'garbage-collected' version of the 'Amber' cover art, reflecting the duo's interest in algorithmic decay. 'VLetrmx' has gained a particular legacy as one of the most beautiful ambient pieces in electronic music, frequently cited for its emotive, swelling pads. Historically, this EP solidified Autechre's transition from the dancefloor toward the 'home listening' movement of the mid-90s, proving that electronic music could be as structurally complex as contemporary classical while maintaining a distinct, urban grit.
