Gentlemen

Released on October 5, 1993, by Elektra Records, Gentlemen is the fourth studio album by Cincinnati alternative rock band The Afghan Whigs. Recorded primarily at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, the album was produced by frontman Greg Dulli. The record represents a major creative peak for the band, transitioning them from their Sub Pop grunge roots into a highly sophisticated, soul-influenced brand of cinematic rock. Dulli took thematic inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola's 1982 film One from the Heart, aiming to explore the dark, conflicted psyche of the 1990s male through a song cycle detailing a toxic, disintegrating relationship. Musically, the album contrasts dark, minor-key guitar arrangements with upbeat Motown-inspired structures and draws structural inspiration from Van Morrison's Astral Weeks. It remains widely celebrated as one of the greatest breakup albums of all time.
