Ghost

Ghost is the 2007 debut studio album by Radical Face, the solo project of Ben Cooper. A landmark of the mid-2000s indie folk movement, the album was famously recorded almost entirely in a tool shed behind Cooper's home in Jacksonville, Florida. This physical isolation informs the record's intimate, 'bedroom-produced' aesthetic. The album is a high-concept work centered on the idea that houses retain the energy and stories of their former inhabitants. Sonically, it is distinguished by Cooper's maximalist approach to layering; despite the folk label, tracks often feature dozens or even hundreds of recorded parts, particularly vocal harmonies that create a 'wall of sound' effect. The track 'Welcome Home' became a massive sleeper hit, appearing in numerous films and commercials, though the album remains a cohesive, atmospheric journey best experienced as a single narrative arc. It established Cooper's signature use of non-traditional percussion and sepia-toned storytelling.
