Go Bang!

Released in March 1988, Go Bang! is the sixth studio album by English rock band Shriekback. The album represents a major stylistic shift for the group, following the departure of founding member and bassist Dave Allen. Under pressure from Island Records to deliver a commercial breakthrough, the band brought in British producer Richard James Burgess to helm the sessions. The resulting record is a highly polished, synth-heavy dance-rock album that stands in stark contrast to the swampy, post-punk atmosphere of their earlier work. Despite studio tensions regarding this commercial direction, the album successfully generated hits on the US charts. The lead single 'Intoxication' reached #6 on the newly established Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, while their cover of KC and the Sunshine Band's 'Get Down Tonight' spent six weeks on the Billboard Dance/Club chart, peaking at #20. Tragically, Island Records A&R man Joel Webber, who had championed the project, passed away shortly before the album's release. Following this record, Barry Andrews would eventually steer the band back toward their traditional, experimental sound on 1992's Sacred City.
