Grassroots

Released in 1994, Grassroots is the pivotal second album by 311, serving as the bridge between their independent beginnings and their mainstream breakthrough. Following a fractured start with producer Eddy Offord, the band took over production themselves, recording the entire project in a small house in Van Nuys, California. This DIY environment resulted in a signature 'muddy' sound that the band intentionally cultivated. The album marks the first use of a five-string Warwick bass by P-Nut, which significantly altered the band's low-end frequency profile. Tracks like 'Applied Science' became legendary for their live drum solos, while 'Omaha Stylee' paid homage to their Nebraska origins. Despite its low-budget recording conditions, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1999, proving the enduring appeal of its unique funk-metal and reggae-rock synthesis.
