Greed

Released in 1986, Greed is the third studio album by Swans and marks a significant aesthetic pivot. Following the sheer sonic brutality of 'Filth' and 'Cop', Michael Gira began incorporating more varied instrumentation and a slower, more deliberate sense of space. Most notably, this album introduces Jarboe, whose presence would eventually lead the band toward more melodic and neoclassical territories. The recording utilizes multiple drummers and tape operations to create a dense, layered rhythmic foundation that feels mechanical rather than human. Tracks like 'Fool' showcase a surprising vulnerability through the use of piano, while 'Money Is Flesh' retains the industrial grit of their early years. Critics often view Greed and its sister album Holy Money as a bridge between the band's early nihilism and the gothic grandeur of their late-80s work.
