Haiku From Zero

Released in 2017, Haiku From Zero represents a pivot toward structural discipline for Cut Copy. Following the expansive, psychedelic explorations of Free Your Mind, this fifth studio album was recorded in Atlanta with producer Ben H. Allen. The recording process was unique for the band, as they moved away from their usual self-produced, home-studio approach toward a traditional studio environment. This shift resulted in their most concise and direct collection of songs to date, notably omitting the instrumental interludes that had become a hallmark of their previous LPs. Sonically, the album leans heavily into nu-disco and tropical house influences, featuring prominent polyrhythmic percussion and a 'live' band feel that distinguishes it from purely programmed synth-pop. While some critics noted a lack of the experimental 'vision' found on earlier records, the album was praised for its high-level craft and its ability to maintain the band's signature blend of indie sensitivity and dancefloor utility.
