Halflife

Released in 2000, Halflife serves as the critical bridge between Lacuna Coil's debut 'In a Reverie' and their breakthrough 'Unleashed Memories'. This 5-track EP solidified the band's 'dual-vocal' approach, featuring the contrast between Cristina Scabbia's soaring soprano and Andrea Ferro's grounded baritone. Sonically, it moved away from the more traditional gothic-doom tropes of the 90s toward a more modern, alternative metal sound characterized by down-tuned, rhythmic riffing and lush keyboard textures. The inclusion of a cover of Dubstar's 'Stars' highlighted the band's pop sensibilities and their ability to recontextualize non-metal melodies into their own melancholic framework. Recorded at Woodhouse Studios with producer Waldemar Sorychta, the EP features a signature European metal production - warm, slightly murky, and highly atmospheric. It remains a fan favorite for its concentrated dose of the band's early urban-gothic aesthetic.
