Heron's self-titled debut is a landmark of the British folk-rock movement, distinguished primarily by its radical recording process. Eschewing the traditional studio environment, the band and producer Peter Eden took a mobile recording unit to a field in Appleford, Berkshire. This decision resulted in a sonic profile defined by natural reverb and environmental textures, most notably the birdsong that permeates the tracks. Musically, the album sits between the gentle pop-sensibilities of Simon & Garfunkel and the pastoral traditions of Nick Drake or Fairport Convention. While the tracks are technically folk-rock, the 'rock' element is subdued, favoring acoustic guitars and light percussion that respect the fragility of the outdoor setting.
