Released in 1974 and produced by Joel Dorn, Homeless Brother represents a pivot toward more grounded, Americana-influenced storytelling for Don McLean. Following the massive success of 'American Pie', this record strips away the grandiosity in favor of starker arrangements and more challenging lyrical themes. The album is notable for its focus on the 'outsider' archetype, most famously on the title track and the morbidly fascinating 'The Legend of Andrew McCrew', which tells the true story of a hobo whose mummified body was displayed at carnivals for decades.
