Hot Garden Stomp

Released in 1993 on Shrimper Records, Hot Garden Stomp is one of the definitive early 'boombox era' releases from The Mountain Goats. Recorded entirely by John Darnielle on a portable cassette recorder, the album is a masterclass in the anti-folk and lo-fi aesthetics that would define the American underground in the early nineties. Sonically, it is characterized by the 'grind' of the tape and the percussive quality of Darnielle's guitar playing, which often incorporates the sound of his hand hitting the wood of the instrument. Lyrically, the album introduces several recurring motifs in the Mountain Goats canon, including the 'Going to...' series and references to Greek mythology.
