Recorded in September 1976 at the Benedictine Abbey in Ottobeuren, Germany, 'Hymns / Spheres' stands as one of the most unique entries in Keith Jarrett's discography. Moving away from his signature piano, Jarrett utilizes the 'Karl Joseph Riepp' Trinity Organ to perform entirely spontaneous improvisations. The album is notable for Jarrett's technical experimentation; he famously manipulated the organ's stops - pulling them only partially to restrict airflow - which resulted in unique, wavering pitches and microtonal textures that predated many modern electronic ambient techniques.
