Hyperion

Released in 2019, Hyperion represents Mike Lévy's most significant stylistic pivot. Following the aggressive industrial techno of Aleph, this sophomore effort saw Gesaffelstein signing to Columbia Records and embracing a more melodic, pop-oriented structure. The album is notable for its high-profile features, including The Weeknd and Pharrell Williams, which signaled a move toward the mainstream that divided his core fanbase. Sonically, the record retains the 'brutalist' aesthetic of his previous work but applies it to synth-pop and downtempo frameworks. The production is characterized by extreme digital clarity and a minimalist approach to arrangement, often leaving large amounts of negative space. While critics were divided on the lack of a cohesive identity, the album succeeded in cementing Gesaffelstein's role as a bridge between the fashion world, the pop charts, and the dark electronic underground. The ten-minute ambient closer, 'Humanity Gone', serves as a bridge back to his more experimental roots.
