I, Assassin

Released in 1982, I, Assassin is Gary Numan's sixth studio album and marks a significant stylistic shift toward a funk-influenced electronic sound. Recorded primarily at Rock City Studios, the album is notable for the prominent use of the fretless bass, played by a then-unknown Pino Palladino. This musical choice fundamentally altered Numan's sonic palette, replacing the thick Minimoog drones of his earlier 'Machine' era with a more agile, rhythmic foundation. The album reached number 8 on the UK Albums Chart and produced three top 20 singles, including 'Music for Chameleons' and 'We Take Mystery to Bed'. Critically, it is often viewed as the bridge between his pure synth-pop origins and the darker, more experimental directions he would take later in the decade.
