I, Flathead

Released in 2008, I, Flathead is the concluding chapter of Ry Cooder's acclaimed California Trilogy, following Chavez Ravine and My Name Is Buddy. Unlike its predecessors, which focused on historical social struggles and political allegory, I, Flathead is a more personal, character-driven exploration of the 'flathead' racing culture of the 1940s and 50s. The album was originally released as a deluxe package accompanied by a 104-page novella written by Cooder, which provides the backstory for the songs' protagonists, such as the racing musician Kash Buk. Sonically, the album is a masterclass in roots synthesis, blending country-western, rockabilly, Tex-Mex, and even elements of rumba and cool jazz. Cooder's son, Joachim Cooder, provides the rhythmic backbone on drums, while legendary session players like Jim Keltner and Flaco Jiménez contribute to the album's rich, organic feel. It stands as a definitive example of late-career Cooder: intellectually dense, musically effortless, and deeply evocative of the American West.
