Released in 1992, Images and Words is the definitive cornerstone of the progressive metal genre. Following a period of uncertainty after the departure of original vocalist Charlie Dominici, the band recruited James LaBrie, whose operatic range became a signature element of their sound. Recorded at BearTracks Studios, the album's production is notable for its '90s-style polish, particularly the controversial triggered snare sound which has since become a point of historical debate among audiophiles. Despite its complexity, the lead single 'Pull Me Under' became an unlikely MTV hit, propelling the album to Gold status. The record is structured around long-form compositions like 'Learning to Live' and 'Metropolis, Part I,' which introduced the band's penchant for intricate instrumental 'unisons' and thematic recurring motifs.
