Invisible Ones

Released in 2005, Invisible Ones marks Orenda Fink's first major artistic statement outside of her work with Maria Taylor in Azure Ray. While Azure Ray was defined by a specific brand of melancholic dream-pop, this solo debut pivots toward a more grounded, yet spiritually experimental sound. The album was deeply influenced by Fink's travels to Haiti and her fascination with Vodou culture, which manifests in the lyrical themes of 'Les Invisibles' (the spirits) and the rhythmic structures that underpin the tracks. Recorded for the influential Saddle Creek label, the album features contributions from Omaha staples but maintains a distinct, isolated identity. Critically, it was praised for its unique use of the banjo as an atmospheric tool and its successful blending of Southern American folk with Caribbean spiritualism. It remains a cult favorite for its ability to evoke a very specific sense of place - the intersection of the American South and the mystical tropics.
