Released in 2019, Jimmy Lee is Raphael Saadiq's fifth solo studio album and arguably his most personal work to date. Named after his brother who died of a heroin overdose, the album functions as a loose concept record exploring themes of addiction, mass incarceration, and family trauma. Sonically, it represents a major departure from the '60s Motown and '70s soul revivalism of albums like The Way I See It and Stone Rollin'. Instead, Saadiq embraces a murkier, more experimental palette, incorporating dissonant electronic sounds and modern R&B production while maintaining his foundational focus on deep, melodic bass lines. Recorded at his North Hollywood studio, the project features collaborations with Chris Dave and Kendrick Lamar, blending socially conscious lyrics reminiscent of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On with the sonic adventurousness of Prince's Sign o' the Times. The album received universal acclaim, currently holding one of the highest Metacritic scores for any R&B release in the 21st century.
