Journey Into the Morn

Released in 1995, Journey Into the Morn represents the creative zenith of Iona, a band that carved a unique niche by blending Celtic folk traditions with the structural complexity of progressive rock. Following a three-year studio hiatus after Beyond These Shores, the band returned with a more expansive and polished sound, recorded primarily at The Soundfield in Derbyshire. The album is bookended by two parts of 'Bí-Se I Mo Shúil,' a traditional Gaelic hymn that establishes the record's spiritual and cultural anchor. Musically, it features the interplay between Dave Bainbridge's virtuosic, often Fripp-influenced guitar work and Nick Beggs' distinctive Chapman Stick and bass lines. The inclusion of uilleann pipes and low whistles provides a melodic texture that distinguishes this from standard prog-rock of the era.
