Jumpworld

Released in 1990 on the JMT label, Jumpworld represents Cassandra Wilson's most complete realization of the M-Base (Macro-Basic Array of Structured Extemporization) philosophy. Working closely with saxophonist Steve Coleman and other members of the collective, Wilson moved away from the standard songbook format to explore complex, non-linear rhythmic structures. The album is notable for its integration of early electronic textures and funk-adjacent grooves, which contrast sharply with the acoustic, blues-driven sound she would later adopt on Blue Light 'til Dawn. Critics often cite this era as her most experimental, showcasing her ability to treat the voice as a rhythmic instrument. The track 'Lies' serves as a centerpiece, demonstrating her gift for narrative storytelling within an avant-garde framework. While less commercially successful than her later Grammy-winning work, Jumpworld remains a cult classic for its unique 'jazz-noir' aesthetic and its role in defining the sound of the Brooklyn jazz underground at the turn of the decade.
