June is a foundational lo-fi project by Michelle Zauner, released under the Japanese Breakfast moniker three years before her breakout debut Psychopomp. The album was the result of a 'song-a-day' challenge during June 2013, consisting of 30 tracks that correspond to each day of the month. Sonically, it is a radical departure from the polished art-pop of her later career, favoring a 'bedroom pop' aesthetic defined by acoustic guitars, minimal keyboard lines, and raw, often unedited vocal takes. The project serves as a public sketchbook, documenting Zauner's songwriting evolution and emotional state in a period of transition. While many tracks are vignettes or fragments, they contain the melodic DNA and lyrical vulnerability that would define her later work. Originally released on Bandcamp, it remains a cult favorite among fans for its extreme intimacy and its role as a historical marker of Zauner's DIY roots in the Philadelphia indie scene.
