Kanon Pokajanen

Kanon Pokajanen is widely considered Arvo Pärt's most significant and ambitious choral work. Commissioned for the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral, the piece is based on the Canon of Repentance to Our Lord Jesus Christ, a 7th-century Greek text used in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Pärt spent over two years composing the work, meticulously following the natural flow and stress of the Church Slavonic text to dictate the rhythm and melody. This adherence to linguistic structure results in a more fluid, less rigid application of his signature 'tintinnabuli' style. While many of his works are characterized by a crystalline lightness, this album is notable for its dark, resonant depth, particularly in its use of the basso profondo range. It represents the pinnacle of his sacred minimalism, stripping away all artifice to focus on the raw, spiritual power of the human voice in a sacred space.
