Kantos

Released in 2024, Kantos represents a significant stylistic pivot for Kishi Bashi, moving away from the Americana and folk-adjacent textures of Omoiyari toward a maximalist, funk-driven art pop sound. Inspired by a trip to Greece and an obsession with the intersection of ancient mythology and modern technology (specifically AI), the album functions as a sonic bridge between disparate worlds. Musically, it is heavily influenced by the Japanese City Pop movement of the late 70s and early 80s, as well as the sophisticated disco of artists like Chic. The recording features a more prominent use of synthesizers and electric bass than previous efforts, though his hallmark violin remains the primary melodic engine. Critical reception highlighted the album's technical brilliance and its ability to remain accessible despite its complex arrangements and philosophical lyrical themes.
