Kerber

Released in 2021, Kerber is Yann Tiersen’s most explicit embrace of electronic music to date. Named after a chapel on the island of Ushant where Tiersen lives and works, the album was conceived as a piano record that was subsequently 're-composed' using modular synthesis and sampling. This process creates a unique sonic signature where the acoustic piano provides the emotional core, while the electronics provide the environment, often blurring the lines between the two. Unlike his earlier work which relied on traditional French instrumentation like the accordion, Kerber is rooted in the tradition of electronic pioneers and modern classical minimalists. It was recorded at Tiersen's own studio, The Eskal, a converted discotheque on the island. The album received positive reviews for its technical ambition and its ability to translate the isolation of island life into a cohesive, immersive listening experience, marking a significant evolution in his discography.
