Le Noise

Released in 2010, Le Noise represents the first and only collaboration between Neil Young and producer Daniel Lanois. The album is a radical departure from Young's traditional folk or garage-rock arrangements, featuring Young performing entirely solo. Lanois utilized his signature 'Black Dub' production techniques - heavy delay, pitch-shifting, and sonically manipulated feedback - to expand the sound of Young's Gretsch White Falcon into a massive, atmospheric wall of sound. The recording took place at Lanois's Silverlake home, utilizing the natural acoustics of the mansion to enhance the record's sense of scale. Lyrically, the album is deeply influenced by the recent passing of Young's longtime friends L.A. Johnson and Ben Keith, resulting in some of his most direct meditations on mortality and the passage of time. Critics praised the album for its innovative sonic palette, with many noting that Lanois managed to make Young sound more contemporary than he had in decades without sacrificing his essential ruggedness. It won a Grammy for Best Rock Song ('Angry World') and remains a high-water mark for Young's late-career experimentation.
