Lost in the Cedar Wood

Lost in the Cedar Wood is a collaborative studio album between British musician/actor Johnny Flynn and nature writer Robert Macfarlane, released in 2021. The project was born out of a long-distance correspondence during the COVID-19 lockdowns, with the duo using the ancient Mesopotamian 'Epic of Gilgamesh' as a lens through which to examine the modern environmental crisis and the experience of isolation. Recorded in a solar-powered cottage in the South Downs, the album's production is characterized by its raw, analog warmth and the inclusion of natural ambient sounds. Sonically, it moves away from the more polished indie-folk of Flynn's earlier work toward a more skeletal, 'earth-stained' sound. The record was highly praised by critics for its intellectual depth and its ability to make ancient mythology feel visceral and immediate, cementing Flynn's reputation as a premier literary songwriter in the modern folk tradition.
