Lycanthropy

Released in 2003, Lycanthropy is the debut studio album by Patrick Wolf, recorded when he was just 19 years old. It stands as a seminal work in the early 2000s folktronica movement, though it leans much harder into experimental IDM and neofolk than its peers. The album was largely self-produced on a laptop, utilizing a blend of traditional acoustic instruments - most notably the viola and ukulele - alongside heavy digital manipulation and field recordings. This 'bedroom-orchestral' aesthetic became Wolf's early calling card. Lyrically, the album functions as a coming-of-age narrative, heavily steeped in animal metaphors and coastal imagery to explore themes of transformation, alienation, and sexual identity. While Wolf would later move toward more maximalist, polished baroque pop, Lycanthropy remains his most experimental and grit-textured work, prized for its unique 'gothic-on-the-beach' atmosphere and its fearless blending of classical training with glitch aesthetics.
