Machismo

Released in 1988, Machismo served as the ambitious follow-up to Cameo's multi-platinum breakthrough Word Up!. Produced by Larry Blackmon, the album solidified the trio's transition from a sprawling funk collective to a lean, synth-driven hit machine. Recorded during a period of peak commercial visibility, the album features a distinct visual and sonic aesthetic influenced by high fashion, notably Jean Paul Gaultier. Musically, it pushes the 'Cameo sound' - characterized by minimalist arrangements, heavy gated drums, and Blackmon's nasal vocals - into even more aggressive territory. The lead single 'You Make Me Work' and the socially conscious 'Skin I'm In' showcased the band's ability to balance club-ready grooves with thematic depth. While it didn't quite match the chart-topping heights of its predecessor, it was certified Gold and remains a favorite among funk purists for its uncompromising production and rhythmic precision. The album is a pivotal example of late-80s electro-funk, blending live instrumentation with emerging digital technologies.
