Maiden Voyage

Recorded in a single day in March 1965, Maiden Voyage is Herbie Hancock's fifth leader date and arguably his most cohesive acoustic statement. While Hancock was a member of Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet at the time, this session (featuring quintet mates Ron Carter and Tony Williams) allowed him to fully explore his fascination with modal harmony and conceptual songwriting. The album is structured as a nautical suite, with each track exploring a different facet of the sea, from the calm of the title track to the turbulence of 'The Eye of the Hurricane.' It marked a significant evolution from his earlier soul-jazz hits like 'Watermelon Man,' moving toward a more abstract, 'post-bop' language. The recording, handled by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, captures the crystalline clarity of Hancock's touch and the revolutionary, polyrhythmic approach of a teenage Tony Williams.
