Marathon

Released in September 1979, Marathon represents a significant stylistic shift for Santana, moving away from the spiritual and experimental jazz-fusion of the previous years toward a more accessible Arena Rock and AOR (Adult Oriented Rock) sound. This era was marked by the arrival of Scottish singer Alex Ligertwood, whose powerful vocal style would define the band's sound for much of the 1980s. Produced by the band alongside Keith Olsen and David DeVore, the album features a streamlined approach to songwriting, with shorter track lengths and a focus on melodic hooks. Despite the commercial polish, Carlos Santana’s guitar work remains the centerpiece, characterized by his signature sustain and fluid phrasing. The album produced the hit single 'You Know That I Love You,' which solidified the band's presence on Top 40 radio. While some purists lamented the move away from Latin-rock improvisation, Marathon was a commercial success that proved the band's versatility in a changing musical landscape.
