Released in late 1990, MCMXC a.D. is the debut masterwork of Michael Cretu under the Enigma moniker. It represents a landmark moment in electronic music, successfully bridging the gap between New Age spirituality and mainstream club culture. The album is famous for its pioneering use of Gregorian chant samples (specifically from the Capella Antiqua München), which Cretu layered over mid-tempo breakbeats inspired by Soul II Soul. This 'Enigmatic' sound became a global phenomenon, reaching number one in over 40 countries. Conceptually, the record explores the tension between religious dogma and human desire, most notably on the hit single 'Sadeness (Part I)'. Its production relies heavily on the E-mu Emulator III sampler and the PPG Wave synthesizer, creating a signature 'worldbeat' texture that defined the early 90s. Despite initial controversy regarding the unauthorized use of choral samples, the album is now recognized as a foundational text for the downtempo and trip-hop movements.
