Melody & Silence

Released in March 2021, Melody & Silence represents a significant stylistic pivot for the New York-based duo The Knocks. Known primarily for their high-energy nu-disco and collaborative pop-house, this four-track EP sees Ben Ruttner and James Patterson exploring downtempo and trip-hop influences. The project is centered around reimagined versions of iconic 90s alternative tracks, including The Verve's 'Bittersweet Symphony' and Beck's 'Devil's Haircut'. By stripping away the original grit and replacing it with lush, analog synthesizer arrangements and slowed-down tempos, the duo aligns themselves with the 'lo-fi' and 'sunrise' electronic movements. The EP concludes with a 'Sunrise' version of their own track 'All About You', further cementing the record's identity as a post-party wind-down tool. Critically, it was noted for its sophisticated production and its ability to evoke a specific sense of '90s nostalgia without relying on kitsch.
