Memory Vague

Released in 2009, Memory Vague is a seminal work by Daniel Lopatin, operating as Oneohtrix Point Never. While technically a DVD compilation of music videos, its audio content serves as a primary text for the vaporwave and hypnagogic pop movements. The project was famously edited using Windows Movie Maker and sourced entirely from YouTube clips, specifically focusing on 1980s high-fidelity equipment advertisements and pop music. This 'eccojam' style - characterized by short, looped samples that are slowed down and heavily processed with echo - became a blueprint for an entire generation of internet-based producers. The track 'Nobody Here' is widely cited as the first true vaporwave track, distilling a fragment of Chris de Burgh's 'The Lady in Red' into an existential loop. Memory Vague marks a transition in Lopatin's career from the kosmische-inspired synth explorations of 'Betrayed in the Octagon' toward a more conceptual, sample-heavy interrogation of cultural memory and digital decay.
