Mermaid Avenue

Mermaid Avenue is a landmark collaborative project initiated by Nora Guthrie, who invited Billy Bragg to set her father Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics to new music. Bragg recruited Wilco to provide the backing and additional songwriting, resulting in a record that redefined the Americana genre in the late 1990s. Recorded primarily at Totally Confused Studios in Dublin and Chicago, the sessions were famously tense between Bragg and Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, yet that friction produced a remarkably cohesive and vibrant sound.
