Mermaid Avenue, Vol. II

Mermaid Avenue, Vol. II is the second installment of the collaboration between English singer-songwriter Billy Bragg and American indie-rock band Wilco, commissioned by Woody Guthrie's daughter, Nora. The project involved setting previously unrecorded Guthrie lyrics to new music. While Vol. I established the template, Vol. II is often cited for its deeper emotional resonance and more varied sonic palette, ranging from the psychedelic folk of 'Secret of the Sea' to the stark, moving 'Remember the Mountain Bed.' Recorded primarily at Totally Confused Studios in Chicago and Windmill Lane in Dublin, the album captures a transitional moment for Wilco as they moved toward the experimentalism of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, while Bragg provides the grounding folk-punk soul.
