Released in 2003, Mescalero represents a significant creative pivot for ZZ Top, marking their final album for RCA and a return to the 'Tejano' aesthetic of their early career. Produced by Billy Gibbons at Foam Box Recordings in Houston, the album is notable for its dense, 'fuzzy' sonic palette and the integration of non-traditional instruments like marimba and accordion. While the band's previous RCA efforts (Antenna, Rhythmeen, XXX) struggled to find a balance between their blues roots and modern production, Mescalero leans into a more eccentric, experimental approach.
