Midnight Café

Released in 1976, Midnight Café is the third studio album by British rock band Smokie and represents the pinnacle of their collaboration with the songwriting and production powerhouse of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman (Chinnichap). Following the success of 'Changing All the Time', this record solidified the band's signature sound: a blend of gritty, raspy lead vocals and highly sophisticated vocal harmonies that drew frequent comparisons to The Eagles, albeit with a distinct Northern English sensibility. The album features a mix of Chinnichap originals and band-written material, showcasing a growing maturity in their arrangements. Sonically, it is a masterclass in mid-70s studio production, characterized by a 'dry' but warm aesthetic that emphasizes the texture of the instruments.
